The Value – and Danger – of Being a Team Player

Everybody likes a good team player, right? Well, yes – but it’s sometimes very challenging to develop a resume for one!

Many people who consider themselves to be team players have a hard time separating their part of the job from the final product. Their resumes use many phrases like “supported the design of” this, and “collaborated in the development of” that. The problem is, a potential employer is not hiring the whole team; they are just hiring the one individual holding the resume, who has suddenly gone from being part of an orchestra to a solo act.

If this describes your own situation, there is hope, but you will have to do some serious self-analysis. Sit down with a pencil and paper and figure out exactly what you did in the course of a typical day. You may have used computer-assisted design software to engineer a new prototype. You may have used Microsoft Word to develop test specifications for a product soon to be in production. You may have phoned vendors to check on delivery dates, and you may have consulted with higher-ups to confirm that the process is going according to plan. Although you did not develop the final product on your own, the steps you took to get there were, in fact, individual ones.

Of course, while you are blowing your own horn about your personal strengths and skills, make sure to add that you are an outstanding team player, capable of merging your talents seamlessly with a wide variety of other team members. When you get these two sides of your working personality in balance, you will find qualities in yourself you never knew existed, and your resume will be much stronger.
