"Maximizing Recruiter Assistance During a Job Search"

A critical job search method is the use of Executive Recruiters, also known as “Headhunters’ or, in memory of the 1950’s horror flick, ‘the Bodysnatchers.’

Executive recruiters fill only a small minority of positions today, but they often control placement in some of the best jobs with the finest employers.  Therefore, they are definitely worth your time and trouble.

Importantly, recruiters fall into two broad categories - Retained and Contingency.  Retained recruiters have existing relationships with client companies and often act as their HR recruitment arm in obtaining/hiring new employees.  Contingency recruiters usually don’t have specific openings, but instead market candidates to multiple companies and try to ‘create’ a match and a hiring.  Either category may help your search.

Here are some steps to follow:  .

  1. Research recruiters.  Determine expertise in functions (i.e., marketing. distribution, manufacturing), industries (i.e., telecommunications, banking, construction) and geography.  A great tool is the ‘Directory of Executive Recruiters,’ Kennedy Publications, Fitzwilliam, NH,  available in any good library.
  2. Make a target list for you and your skills/objectives based on the above criteria.
  3. Contact these recruiters via mail/e-mail with a cover letter and resume.
  4. Follow-up in two weeks to ascertain interest in you and your background.
  5. If a recruiter calls on a position, ask for a company job description and try to gain information on salary ranges.
  6. Use the recruiter to prep for the interview.  They probably know much about the company and its needs.
  7. Do a post-interview analysis/evaluation with the recruiter and see if there is any company feedback.
  8. If hired, be sure to express your appreciation to the recruiter and keep the relationship alive as job circumstances do change over time.

By following these steps, you can make your relationships with recruiters a positive boost to your search efforts.
