Outer Office Job Search Manners

Written by Kathy Marshall, Professional Resume Writer

When arriving at a job interview, the first person you might meet will be the doorman or the parking attendant. Shortly thereafter, you will most likely meet the receptionist or secretary to the person who will be hiring you.

If you are thoughtless or rude in any way, watch out!  Subtle signals from the receptionist can nix your employment opportunity before you even step into the interviewer's office.  It might take only a slight roll of the receptionist's eyes when they introduce you, or a disapproving shake of the head shake can do it, too.

What can provoke this reaction?  It might be your loud chatter on your cell phone while you’re waiting your turn to be interviewed.  Maybe you expressed impatience at being kept waiting.  Did you leave your briefcase on the secretary’s desk or counter and invade their space?  Did your perfume or aftershave invade the waiting room? Were you eating or drinking in the waiting area?

An employer might not even recognize how much another subtle signs are affecting their decisions, but you can be sure they are… so mind your manners.  Treat EACH person you meet in the company as an important person in your hiring process.
