Resume Writing - Five Areas to Avoid on Your Resume

Except for you at the interview, your resume is your primary selling tool in the job search.  Unfortunately, many people make common mistakes that can really diminish their chances of finding suitable employment.  Here are the five worst, and most common, resume errors:

  1. Social Security numbers on the resume.  No, this won’t really hurt your chances for a job, but will make you a prime target for identity theft.  Your resume, in the course of a search, might be seen by hundreds or more people.  If only one is an identity thief, you could have serious financial, credit and personal problems.  Please protect yourself and never put this item on your resume.
  2. Birth date. We all know age discrimination goes on no matter what disclaimers companies make.  That being the case, why make it easy for them to discriminate against you?  If it is on the resume, your chances of getting to the interview stage may be fatally compromised.  On the other hand, if you get to the interview, your personal presentation could overcome the issue.  Leave your birth date off the resume and you’ll be happier.
  3. Job Chronology going back farther than 10-15 years.  See “Birth date” above - all the same reasons apply.  On the resume, categorize that older experience in a section titled “Earlier Background” and discuss without dates.
  4. Personal Information, i.e. marital status, health, children, church, political affiliation, is all irrelevant to the job search and could be used against you.
  5. Excessive length.  Decision-makers are busy people.  They don’t have the time or inclination to spend endless amounts of time evaluating a 5- or 10- or 30-page (yes, we’re seen some!) document.  Business standard resume length is 1-2 pages.  If George Washington’s life can be summarized on one or two pages, so can yours.

Obviously, there are many more potential resume mistakes, but these are a good place to start.  Clean up your document and your search will be more productive...
