Value of Networking
“It’s not what you know; it’s who you know.”
Many people see this remark as cynical, but there’s a lot of truth to it. Just recently, my daughter and her husband bid on a house in a very hot real estate market. They knew theirs was not the only bid; they just hoped it was the highest. Coincidentally, that very evening, my son-in-law ran into an old friend who turned out to be the seller’s nephew. He convinced his aunt to accept my daughter and son-in-law’s bid, and the house was theirs.
If that type of thing happens in real estate, it goes double for job hunting in the private sector. If the choice comes down to an applicant the employer knows and trusts versus an equally well-qualified stranger, the job will always go to the person who is trusted and known. And why wouldn’t it? Employers want to feel comfortable with the people they employ, and we are more comfortable with people we know.
You can get resentful about this situation, or you can recognize it for what it is – a natural human impulse – and resolve to become the person everyone knows and trusts. All you have to do is make a strong positive impression on as many people as possible! Become active in your religious or civic group, taking on leadership positions and following through. Consider joining a job club or networking group, and again, don’t be a wallflower; take on a volunteer job that would enable you to meet and become known by a wide spectrum of people.
When you look for a job, make sure even relatively casual acquaintances know of your search, the type of position you’re looking for, and your qualifications. And ask for their help! Some people just don’t get the message that you are enlisting their assistance in your search unless you spell it out for them. And, when they do come up with possible suggestions, follow up on them, or they may not bother trying again.
Build your network – work your network – and respect your network, and you won’t be unemployed for long!
